This mission was in conjunction with the AIRS2 program over Mirabel. The NASA ER-2 flew nine racetrack patterns over Mirabel. No instrument failures were reported for the ER-2. The Citation took off at 1657Z and arrived at the runway intersection of Maribel at 1813Z and did a spiral descent (maneuver 3) from 35,000 ft down to 2000 ft. Cloud tops at this time were at 27,000 ft. After the descent, the aircraft then climbed up to 8,000 ft and started making passes along the 06/24 runway in 2000 ft increments up to 18,000 ft. The Citation then did a spiral ascent up to cloud tops, which were at about 29,000 ft. with a few convective elements going up to 29,500 ft. During the passes along the runway, the Citation encountered mostly ice crystals with a few patches of supercooled liquid water at different times and at different elevations. The cloud tops at the west end of the legs were much lower than at the east end and the aircraft was out of cloud at 18,000 ft at the west end. The spiral ascent at the east end had tops over 29,000 ft. The aircraft finished the ascent at 2002Z and landed in Montreal for fuel. As most airports were below minimums or marginal, the aircraft returned to Bangor. The trip from Montreal to Bangor showed clouds consisting almost entirely of ice crystals at altitudes above the melting level. The Citation landed in Bangor at 0011Z on the 29th UTC.
