Mission Summary for Dec 10, 2003
|
ER-2 flew to the far eastern areas (~40W). Citation flew about
50 miles east of St. Johns (~50W) then turned back to Bangor early.
This mission was intended to support ATReC and to fly as far east of St.
John's as possible, go north 60 nautical miles and return to St. John's.
The Citation took off from Bangor at 1332Z to refuel in St. John's,
landing in St. John's at 1609Z. The lack of suitable alternates for
landing made it necessary to cut the distance eastward that the Citation
could travel, since the only useable alternate was Stevenville, at the
western end of Newfoundland. The distance was further cut when the
aircraft was limited to an altitude of 23,000 ft. After becoming
airborne at 1836Z, the Citation was restricted to 46 degrees W and
beyond for dropping sondes, farther than the aircraft was able to go
safely under the restrictions imposed. So the Citation turned and went
back to Bangor, landing at 2137Z.
